Why Duel For Spot Is Supremely Stupid

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:27 PM PDT

A bit of background info for people who are not familiar: Dueling for spot is a semi common practice in certain regions where a person will arrive at a spot which is occupied and request a duel. The convention is that whoever wins the duel will end up with the spot and the person who loses will leave.

Now, there is no problem if both parties are fine with this, but my issue comes from the fact that people who advocate for this system will often characterize it as 'fair' or 'honorable,' and may even go as far as calling a person who declines their request a griefer, or 'toxic.' Let's break down the problems with the way people who advocate for duel for spot tend to portray it, as well as the problems with the way dueling for spot works in general.

First, it is common sense to see why this system is in no way fair. Whether it is class imbalance in 1v1, differences in gear level between two players, or the fact that people play this game in very different ways and will develop different skillsets as a result, trying to claim a duel to decide who gets a spot is fair is absurd. Acting like it is fair seems like a convenient way for people to justify promoting a system that benefits them over most other players. Honestly, for me to think that I should be entitled to the spot of almost anyone in the game just because of my gear level makes me sound like an entitled, spoiled brat.

Another common argument I hear is "It's a PvP game, so you should duel for spots." My thoughts on that - PvP is one of many elements of this game, and the game has systems in place that allow you to force PvP or contest someone for their spot by grinding over top of them. You can take advantage of those systems to try to get a spot from someone, but using the fact that this game has PvP elements as the basis for pressuring people into accepting duels for a resource makes little sense. It would make just as much sense for me to claim that it is a lifeskill game, so whichever player has the higher lifeskill total should get the spot.

Potentially the most absurd argument I've heard people put forward is "How else will you find a spot if you don't duel?" Another one which does not need an explanation to show how ridiculous it sounds, and it still confuses me how people still try to make this argument.

Lastly, I will see people claiming they are being respectful by asking to duel instead of just flagging or warring. This is the one I see as most warped, and will be discussed in detail below.

The biggest issue I see and that is less commonly pointed out is the fact that the person who initiates the duel absorbs no risk, while the person who is the recipient of the duel stands to lose something. Essentially, the aggressor is not staking anything. They had no spot when they got there, and if they lose, they still have no spot. Now, if one person wants to try to take a valuable resource that another player is in possession of, it only makes sense that they will have to absorb some risk or make some sacrifice to do so. Trying to flag/war, or farm over the other person at the spot is seen by many people as less polite than requesting a duel for the spot, but trying to get a spot this way forces the aggressor to assume some risk and make some sacrifice (time) to try to get the spot. People who would otherwise attempt to take spots by force often seem to support duels because it is a faster and more convenient way for them to get spots. Basically, they are exploiting the fact that they are not wagering anything, and then trying to disingenuously pass it off as them doing the other person a favor or showing them respect.

Anyway, whether or not dueling for spot is a good system ultimately comes down to one's opinion on spot ownership. Some people view it like a park bench, where no one owns it, but people can occupy it and others will need to wait their turn. Others view a spot as a resource that there should be active competition for. Both are equally valid, and my issue does not come from one of these views vs the other, but from the mindset that someone who refuses a duel is in the wrong. Also as a side note, let's take a moment to appreciate the irony of the people who say "No one owns a grind spot," just for the to to act like they own it after defeating someone in a duel.

Now, to those who like to initiate duels, if someone declines, they are not suddenly a griefer. The person who declined has no obligation to accept your request, and you may have a disagreement or a dispute with them, but to act like they are in the wrong for saying no just reeks of entitlement.

Now for the fun and (even more) controversial part. To those who receive duel requests but disagree with the concept, I urge you to consider refusing even if you are apprehensive about how the other player will react. A lot of times people will be fine with hearing no, but if they aren't, don't give them what they want. There is little worse than the validation of the behavior of a petulant brat who can't take no for an answer. They often behave like that because they are used to bullying people into giving them what they want, and it really shows when they can't stand to be told 'no.'

Also for fun, a few encounters with some belligerent players who did not like hearing no

    Question About Level 49 Characters

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 04:37 PM PDT

With all the DFS talk today it made me wonder if there's a huge downside to throwing all your gear on a lvl49 Alt who can't get flagged on.

Through your 600gs equipment in them and aside from no prime skills would being level 49 with high enough gear be fine to go grind places like Sycria and the like?

Or are there hidden AP caps in place for characters under a certain level?

    Just curious.

    Was addicted - Burned out?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 10:23 PM PDT

    Hello dear adventures,

I was addicted to the BDO and played it in a few years every day, i enjoyed it, was always waiting to come back from work and play it, was reading BDO reddit while was working.

After a new game New World beta has started, i started to play it (Never have played anything else since BDO)

After New world beta has closed until end of September i understood that i don't have the same feelings to BDO, and after a short break i don't want to start to play it again.

Now i tried to play different games and i feel that i don't get my daily dose of dopamine and i feel empty inside..

Have no idea what to do

    Costume

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 06:29 PM PDT

I was wondering if someone could help me find something. After a while of following the main quest, you get a choice of 3 costume boxes from a quest. I wanted to know what each one looked like on my character before I choose. I googled it but I couldn't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
