    Harpooning/Harpoon Prize Fish

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 08:57 PM PDT

    Harpooning/Harpoon Prize Fish

I see a lot of people who ask questions about harpoon fishing for silver and most of them mention that many guides out there are outdated - not even mentioning mastery. Instead of individually explaining this every time it pops up, I figure this is a decent alternative until someone with more knowledge decides to make a larger post.

This is my quick-and-dirty take/advice for anyone wanting to get into harpooning. Below is a screenshot of my fishing mastery so you know I have a decent idea on what I'm talking about and for big dick rod wagging.

    Current Mastery

First point is the mastery level required for harpooning. The tooltip will tell you that at least 200 mastery is required to harpoon a prize fish. I'm going to tell you right now that you shouldn't even waste your time without AT LEAST 700 Fishing Mastery - it's not that hard to reach and will get you to what most fishers describe as the harpooning "softcap". The tooltip describes this range as "Prize Catch Harpoon Level +2". Literally no one knows what this means: it's not a percentage, there's nothing in the datamine that we know about, all we figure is that +2 is better than +1. Although we do not know any "true" percentages for harpooning prize fish, we do know that you are much more likely to get a prize fish from harpooning than using a fishing rod's respective percentage.

Note: No prize fish is impossible to catch just because you're Harpoon +1 or +2 - they may all be caught so long as you are at least Harpoon +1.

The second point is acknowledging a simple fact: Harpoon income is based almost entirely on whether or not you catch prize fish:

    • If you go a full three (3) hours and don't get a single prize fish: you wasted your time.
    • If you go a full three (3) hours and only get one (1) prize fish: you might break even.
    • If you go a full three (3) hours and get three (3) prize fish: you just blew hotspotting out of the fucking water with your profit.

This makes harpooning the more risk-reward option to fishing:

If you want a stable income, then stick to hotspot fishing and you'll net (roughly) 100m/3hrs by trekking your inventory over to Valencia with the desert buff, but if you want to test your luck with the harpoon gun, you can make anywhere between 40m/3hr to 265m/3hr.

Since we're talking about silver/time now, you're probably wondering what the prize fish is that we're killing for this money, which brings me to my third point: Requiem Shark.

Fish guide page for Requiem Shark

Requiem Shark is the targeted prize fish for harpoon fishers for thee simple reasons:

    1. It is the only prize fish in the table (Middle/Central Margoria)
    2. It's worth 75,000,000 silver and, as an "NPC" item, never loses it's value
    3. It's as rare as the Giant Black Squid - yet worth 25,000,000 more - and more common than the Ghost Whale - yet worth 25,000,000 less

Below is a screenshot of the latest datamine for prize fish. The Rareness category dictates the approximate "catch percentage".

Rareness info on prize fish from datamine

As you can see, Requiem Shark has the same rareness as two other fish at 9, while the Ghost Whale shares a rareness with one other fish. This rareness level combined with the amount of money it's worth and the location of the fish itself are factors as to why fishers go after this specific prize fish.

The fourth point to address is what you need/should have to harpoon. There are really only four key components to harpooning:

    • Have a harpoon gun
      • Thick or thin, doesn't matter. I'm lazy so I use Thick Harpoons. There are no Manos Harpoons. I usually store them in the Central Market and take them out when needed.
    • Fishing Boat / Cog Ship
      • This one is going to be a bitch. If you can make one or purchase one: use a Cog. It is superior to the Fishing Boat in literally - literally - every sense of the word. Cog has a base speed AND acceleration of 140% AND HAS BREEZY SAILS REGARDLESS OF SAILING LEVEL. There is zero reason to use the Fishing Boat over the Cog unless you have absolutely no access to one.
    • The Location
      • As suggested: Middle Margoria / Central Margoria.
        • If you don't know where that is, visit SomethingLovely and tick the Sea Regions box. Then hover over the the region to see what fish are there.
        • Using a fishing rod is the best way to confirm whether or not you are in the correct region: by comparing the fish you catch with the fish that SomethingLovely says are able to be caught, you can determine if you need to keep sailing or may anchor down.
    • Mastery level
      • As previously discussed; no reason to repeat the aforementioned.

Fifth, the minigame sucks. It takes too long, it's boring, it desyncs between the sounds of firing and the character animation and the actual harpoon itself animation, and the fish can go outside of the box so you can't even continue the game until it comes back. The fastest you can complete the game is within 21 seconds (39 seconds remaining); you literally cannot go faster.

    And that's about it.

Leave questions/comments if you feel like it, don't if you don't.

    You are reconnecting...

Started getting heaps of "You are reconnecting..." black screens and unplayable lag over the past few days. Anybody else getting this? Is it just server lag? Particularly happens after switching characters. I haven't been able to play for the past 12 hrs. Could it be to do with the new launcher?

Getting a lot of these as well.

    Skill Tooltip Concept

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 07:36 AM PDT

    Skill Tooltip Concept

This is my first attempt at creating a skil tooltip that has clarity, simplixity, order and that follows the current UI design that is being implemented.

I decided to move the skill description to the very top underneath the skill name as it seemed most logical to locate it there. I used lines to separate each section to give the player more visual clarity on what type of information they are viewing, from basic skill description to stats.

I didn't make one that showed the skill as unlearned but in that case the Required Level and Required Points labels would be located in a separate field in between the description box and basic information box (i.e box containing skill input, cooldown etc)

Additionally, I think the developers should add an option to hide the videos as it takes so much space on the screen.

    1400+ Gathering mastery vs. income

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 09:20 AM PDT

How much more income can I expect if mastery (meat/sap/blood) increase from 1300 to 1400 or from 1400 to 1500? (either per hour or per energy is fine). I'm asking because it will be pretty big investment at those levels and not sure if it is worth it?

Aakman Witch Succession 14.5k/hr (Yellow Loot Scroll)

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:12 PM PDT

Just started the game, and now my brain hurts.

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 11:03 PM PDT

My brain is just so gone that when trying to make the title for this post, I forgot how to spell "hurts" and had to take a literal minute to remember how to spell it. Please can someone explain to me what this game is, what the point of it is, why there's so much shit on the screen 24/7, how do I get silver, how do I sell things, why is this black demon ball following me, and what was that whole first cut scene with all of the flash backs and what not?

Seriously I'm desperate as I'm so confused, and I really want to like this game. However I can't when I know literally nothing about it. This is the one thing that I hate about all MMO's, they don't tell you jack shit. I know Warframe isn't an MMO but I'm getting flashbacks of me not understanding anything in that game. I soon hated it due to the fact that I understood nothing about it, but I don't want this to be the same kind of situation.

Please for the love god help me!

Edit: I don't care if you spoil things in order for me to find out the answers to the questions that I said above.
