Black Desert Online: An Unlikely Diamond. (My 200 Hour Experience)

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 03:54 AM PDT

Hello all, this is my first time posting on this sub.

Black Desert Online... It's a game I've been interested in for such a long time ever since its first inception due to the insane graphics, combat, depth, and most importantly character customization. The game however has been put off to me due to the claims of "Massive Pay-To-Win" However, recently players of this game have come back and said the pay to win is not as steep as it once was. Thus, I started my journey here!

What can I say? It is amazing, by far the best MMO I've played!

    The Pay To Win:

This is the thing that drives many people away from even starting this game, because of the claims from the greater MMO community about pay to win. This claim, while holding some merits, is quite misleading in my opinion. The most pay to win thing about this game is the ability to spend thousands of dollars in order to fully enchant all your gear up to PEN (the highest enchantment possible). One can do this by buying costumes and selling them on the marketplace to easily drive up their gold count, however, this is very unadvisable, since how much money that well occur overtime. The other things I've heard of such as Mounts, Pets, Maids & Butlers, I've gotten for free! I have 4 pets with another pet in the questline thus making 5 pets. I feel efficient and not lacking behind. There may be other aspects to pay to win I'm not seeing, but overall I feel as if the game is becoming more and more free to play friendly with the copious amounts of insane events.

    The Grind:

This is the one point that is the truest about BDO. It's the second most grindy game out of any game I've played (behind the legendary Runescape). However, BDO does something that many games cannot, they make you feel happy to Grind. The combat is fully fleshed out playing more like a fighting game than an MMO. The life skills, while I haven't really delved deep into them, the ones I have tried feel fun and rewarding. The game also is AFK friendly for those casuals out there who just have real-life to handle, thus not only does it cater to the hardcore audience, if you are casual you can still become a billionaire! Which is amazing.

    The Community:

The community can be toxic at times, but I found this wonderful guild that has made me feel more at home than any MMO guild ever. The game at its core facilitates PvP, and if anyone has played any competitive PvP game such as League, Overwatch, Smite, Rainbow 6, CounterStrike, etc. PvP tends to bring out the worst in humans. That being said the amount of genuinely nice people is astounding especially in a game that is known for its toxicity, which leaves me wondering if all this vitriol towards this game is coming from people who actually play this game.

    PvP Versus PvE:

This is something that I see brought up a lot when discussing BDO "The Game is a PvP game there's no PvE at endgame". This is utterly wrong, I'd argue that this game is more of a PvE game. Well yes, there are some people who will kill you in a grind spot, they are not as common as one may think. More often than not people apologize and talk like normal humans rather than mercilessly kill you. The game is focused around PvE which is what you'll be doing most of your time on BDO; actually, you can ignore PvP entirely with the stray PK here and there. And the risks of dying is not as bad as other MMOs, you can easily go back to what you're doing without much problem at all.

    The Conclusion:

In conclusion, I believe that BDO is an MMORPG that is unfairly hated upon, but it happens to be one of the best MMORPGs that one can play right now. It's player base the world-building everything is just so large and beautiful. The experience is something that I have never seen before, and I am so happy that I was brave enough to take the plunge. The guys over at r/MMORPG may not enjoy this conclusion, but this is honestly an amazing game. To all you BDO veterans reading this I want to say: Thank you for making this game so fun and inviting. Thank you for speaking out against the insane pay to win and getting better events for us newer players. And Thank You for not murdering me every 5 seconds.

So are all future competitions going to be whoever has the more subs on youtube/twitch cause if this is the case why should anyone ever enter these competitions if they aren't a BDO influencer with a following?
